Definition

"Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn" (CAST 2018).

Universal Design for Learning: 

  • Provides flexibility
  • Accounts for individual learning differences
  • Increases access to learning
  • Removes barriers

UDL curriculum should provide:

  • Multiple means of representation (the WHAT of learning)
  • Multiple means of action & expression (the HOW of learning)
  • Multiple means of engagement (the Why of learning)
