Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

Confused about the differences between these topics? Unsure of how to cite these different types of information? Keep reading!

  • Quoting is reusing exact words or statements directly from a source without making any changes. When you quote from a source, you must put quotation marks around the text and cite the original work.
  • Paraphrasing involves putting information or ideas from a source into your own words. Although you have restated the information, the original idea still belongs to the author of your source, so you must still give the author credit. When you paraphrase, just as when you quote, you still must cite the original work.
  • Summarizing refers to taking a work and putting it into the simplest possible terms, boiling the source down to just its essential elements. Although you've used your own words, and you've made the information shorter, you still must cite the original work.
