Mitchell Community College Library is home to archives encompassing the birth of the College through present day, with materials dating back to the 1800s. The Maverick Room, located on the 3rd floor of the J.P. and Mildred Huskins Library on the Statesville Campus, houses the College archives. The Maverick Room contains a variety of historical materials related to Mitchell Community College, including college course catalogs, yearbooks, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, documents, and miscellaneous papers. Mitchell Community College Archives

Mission

Mitchell Community College Archives is a repository which serves to identify, collect, and preserve documents, photos, publications, and other records relevant to the history of the College, and to provide College employees, students, alumni, and the public with access to those materials.

Collection Development Policy

The collection development policy of Mitchell Community College Archives is based on the Society of American Archivists (SAA) “Guidelines for College and University Archives” (1999) and on the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Collection Development Policy.  

The support of College faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the public is essential to ensuring that records of lasting value are collected, preserved, and made available to interested persons now and in the future.

The Archives collects records that are created or received by the offices of the College in the conduct of their business as well as materials that provide contextual information about the history of Mitchell Community College. Materials appropriate for the archives include, but are not limited to:

  • Legal or constituting documents (e.g. charters, constitutions, by-laws), minutes,  reports and supporting documentation, memoranda, correspondence and policy statements of the Board of Trustees, Mitchell Community College President and Vice Presidents, deans, directors, and major academic and administrative committees.
  • Reports of self-studies and accreditation visits
  • Annual budgets and audits
  • Reports of the public information, community relations, planning and research, and institutional advancement offices
  • Research projects, including grant records
  • Departmental records including minutes and reports
  • Records of the registrar, i.e. calendars and class schedules, enrollment records and other regularly issued reports
  • Records of academic, service, and social organizations of students, faculty and staff
  • Mitchell Community College publications
  • Photographs, films, and audio recordings of Mitchell Community College students, faculty, staff, administrators, events and facilities
  • Oral history interviews and transcripts
  • Maps, blueprints and  plans of the campuses and buildings
  • Some artifacts, as space in the archives and condition of the object permits
  • Newspaper and magazine clippings highlighting Mitchell Community College students, faculty, staff, administrators, events and facilities

All records within the Archive are the property of Mitchell Community College.  The College owns the copyright to all records unless otherwise noted.  Mitchell Community College Archives also adheres to the North Carolina Community College System’s Records Retention and Disposition Schedule.

Mitchell Community College Archives is open to students, faculty, staff, and the public.  In-person research is permitted by appointment only.  Research requests can also be submitted to a librarian via phone or email.  There is no cost to access any archives materials. 

Archives materials are non-circulating and may only be used in the Maverick Room under supervision of a library staff member.  No food or drink is permitted in the Maverick Room, and the use of pens, markers, and highlighters is prohibited.  Reproduction requests will be fulfilled by the archivist as copyright and the condition of the material allows.  The cost of photocopied material, whether black and white or color, is $.10 per side or per page.

A Deed of Gift form must be completed in its entirety for every item donated to the Archives.  Groups of like items or items in a series may be recorded on one Deed of Gift form.  The estimated value of the donation must be included in order to determine whether or not the donation must be capitalized.  If a donation has an estimated value at or above $5,000, the donation will be professionally appraised.  If the donor intends to file for a tax deduction based on his or her donation to the College, the donor must provide the College with documentation of a third-party appraisal.  The purchase of any records for the Archives must be approved by the College President.

A Display Loan form must be completed for any items that are used in the archives or for a special event on a temporary basis.  The College is not responsible for any damage to, or theft of, loaned items, and the owners of loaned items are encouraged to independently insure items of monetary value.
