3D Printing Policy

Huskins Library’s 3D printer, located on the Statesville Campus of Mitchell Community College, is available to the college’s students, faculty and staff.

I. The 3D printer may be used only for lawful purposes. No one will be permitted to use the library’s 3D printer to create material that is:
      a. Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
      b. Obscene or inappropriate.
      c. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
      d. In violation of intellectual property rights. For example, the printer will not be used to reproduce material
subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection.
      e. To be used for personal financial gain.

II. The library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.

III. Cost: There will be a charge of $1.00 per item up to 5 grams in weight and an additional 10 cents per gram over 5 grams in weight.  The cost covers the filament used in the printing process.

At this time, only one color is used for printing a single project.

IV. Print jobs will be submitted using the designated form.  A library staff member will contact the individual to provide pricing information. The print job must be pre-paid in cash before it will be sent to the 3D printer. Files submitted for printing must be in either .STL or .OBJ format.

V. Print jobs will be printed in the order received.  The library cannot guarantee that prints will be printed in a timely manner. 3D printing is unpredictable and printing issues do come up.

VI. Items printed from the 3D printer not picked up within 7 days after being printed become the property of the library. Items must be picked up by the individual who submitted the print request.
VII. Only library staff members may operate the 3D printer.
