State Resources

State of North Carolina

The official website of the State of North Carolina, nc.gov, provides aspiring business owners with a step-by-step guide on how to start their business. The guide includes all pertinent links to additional resources, contacts of interest, and tutorials.

North Carolina Secretary of State

The NC Secretary of State's Office "supports economic growth and public trust by providing infrastructure for businesses, protecting citizens and businesses from fraud, and fostering a transparent and ethical business environment" (Gemini, 2025). From the agency website, business owners can search for business name availability, register their business, and access necessary forms for operating their business.

EDPNC logo Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina

The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) is a non-profit dedicated to helping businesses of all sizes and in all sectors succeed. Their team of Small Business Advisors assist aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs find the state and local resources they need to start their business. SBA consultations are free to anyone starting a new business in the state of NC.

IRS Resources

Small Business Guide

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) compiled a quick reference guide "about Federal tax considerations for those opening and running a small business" (IRS P5557, 2021). The guide provides users with information about business types, tax preparation and filing, tax resources, online learning products, and more.

Employer Identification Number

An employer identification number (EIN) "is a federal tax ID number for businesses, tax-exempt organizations and other entities" (IRS, n.d.). Entrepreneurs and small business owners can obtain an EIN from the IRS for free using the online application tool. For those unable to apply online, options to apply by phone, fax, or mail are also available.

Recordkeeping

Recordkeeping is a crucial step to preserve information about an organization's activities, including legal and regulatory compliance, financial management, and services rendered. The IRS provides small business owners guidelines for good recordkeeping.
