Library FAQs: Checking Out Materials & Accessing Databases

This guide provides answers to frequently asked questions about the Mitchell Community College Libraries.

FAQs

How do I get a library card?
Students use their Mitchell student ID card as their library card. Faculty and staff use their phone number as their library card. The general public can fill out an application and get a library card from either campus library circulation desk.

Do you have to be a Mitchell student to use the library?
No. The library is open to the community as well.

How do I check out books, DVDs, laptops, calculators, puzzles or other equipment?
Students will present their student ID card to check out materials. Faculty, staff and members of the public will present a library card which can be obtained from the circulation desk (with a valid ID).

How many books can I check out?
Students and the general public may borrow up to five (5) items at a time. Faculty and staff members may borrow an unlimited number of items at a time.

What if you don't have a book or DVD I want?
Let us know and we will try to get the item for you, whether we borrow it from another college or buy it.

How do I place a hold on a book or order an Interlibrary Loan?
Search the library catalog for the book you want. You may search either Mitchell's library or all community college libraries.  When viewing the item in the catalog, click the place hold link, enter your student ID number or library card number and submit the form. If one of the Mitchell library locations own the item, it will be pulled from the shelves. If another library owns the item, it will be shipped to Mitchell. You will be contacted when the item(s) is ready for pick-up.

Does the library rent or lend laptops or calculators?
A limited number of laptops and calculators are available for Mitchell students to check out free of charge. They are checked out on a first-come, first-served basis and may be used for the entire semester. Laptops and calculators are only available to Mitchell students. Calculators are available at both locations and laptops are available at the Huskins location.

Does the library lend microphones or webcams?
The library has microphones and webcams available for in-house use only.

Where and how do I pay fines?
Fines can be paid at either Huskins Library or the Mooresville Campus Library by cash.

How do I access databases from outside the library or from my personal computer?
Current students should use their Mitchell credentials (college email address and password).  If you encounter problems, please call Huskins Library at (704) 878-3271 or email library@mitchellcc.edu.
