Research Basics: Citing Sources

This guide leads users through the research process, from selecting a topic to finding and evaluating credible sources.

Make a Research Appointment

Make an appointment to meet one-on-one with a Mitchell Librarian at your convenience.  To make an appointment, please complete the following form, and a librarian will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your appointment time.

Citing Sources

Citing your sources is an important part of any research project, and the Library is here to help you do it with confidence. This section introduces you to the most commonly used citation styles and provides tools, tips, and examples to help you format your work correctly. Whether you're writing a paper, preparing a presentation, or completing a class assignment, this guide will help you to attribute research to original authors, strengthen your credibility, and avoid plagiarism.

The main citation styles or formats are: APA, Bluebook, Chicago, and MLA.

Books & eBooks

The Little Seagull Handbook with Exercises is available at both Mitchell Community College Library locations for check-out and in-house use.

Librarians

Your Mitchell Community College librarians offer one-on-one research appointments to assist researches in generating citations manually and online.

Online Citation Generators

Many databases are equipped with citation generators. To use a generators embedded within a database:

  1. Open the article and click the Cite link/icon.
  2. Select your citation format from the drop-down menu and click the Cite button. Note, some databases may use other words to prompt users to generate a citation.
  3. Select then copy and paste the citation into your Works Cited/Reference page.

NOTE: Citations generated by citation generators are only as good as the information they are provided. Always verify the citations against a reliable guide/manual.

Tutoring Center

Mitchell Community College's Tutoring Center doubles as a writing center where students are matched with writing coaches to assist at any stage along the writing process. Students can also utilize Tutor.com 24/7 to receive virtual writing assistance. 

To access Tutor.com, students click on the Tutor.com link within the Tutoring and Library Resources section in any of their Mitchell courses.
