How to Avoid Plagiarism

  • Use original thoughts and opinions
  • Paraphrase information from sources
  • Use quotation marks for direct quotes from a source
  • Cite your sources (common knowledge does not need a citation)
  • Ask for help! Make a research appointment with a librarian to get citation assistance.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else's work and/or ideas and passing them off as your own. It can be done unintentionally or purposefully. In all cases, plagiarism is unethical and violates Mitchell Community College's Academic Honesty policy as written in the Student Handbook.
