Freedman's Bank Search Tips

While there are no Exact or Similar Match search options, the First and Last Name search fields will automatically search for variations on the names entered into those fields (e.g., When searching for your ancestor Will Goines, the system will search for Will as well as William, Goines as well as Goins and Gaines, and other variations on both the first and last names.
The Name search fields apply to the Applicant's name and the other names listed on each record, which may include spouses, children, parents, and siblings names.
Birth Location is frequently noted on the records, but the Birth Year is rarely asked. Instead there is an Age field. Many people estimated their age, giving an age range to the bank officer (e.g., "about 33 or 34"). Therefore not all records have been indexed with specific Birth Year details, limiting the usability of this field.

Browsing the Freedman's Bank Records

Instead of searching, you may wish to browse the collection by name. Use the "Browse this collection" drop-down menus to select a state and then a year. The Interactive Image Viewer will then load and display the first record within that year and state. Use the filmstrip tool at the bottom of the page to move between images.
