HeritageQuest Online: Books

People Search Tips

The Books Collection defaults to the People search, where you will be greeted by several search fields in which to build your search query.

  • First & Middle Name
  • Last Name
  • Any Event Year
  • Any Event Location
  • Keyword

Use wildcard and truncation symbols (* , ?) to assist with spelling and sound variations (e.g., Sam* will locate instances of Sam, Sammie, Samuel, Samantha, etc. while Hans?n will identify variant forms including Hanson, Hansen, Hansin, or Hansan among others).

There are no required fields, so you may execute a search using any combination of fields you wish. For example, maybe you are interested in locating books about a particular location to learn more about it's history. Use the Location field and/or the Keyword field to find titles that are about or reference that location.

NOTE: All fields on this page will display Exact and Similar matching options after data has been entered into the field. Location matching options differ from the name matching.

City Directories Search Tips

The City Directories search page allows you to focus specifically on these unique and useful publications.

The search page for these publications provides the following search fields in which to construct your query:

  • First & Middle Name
  • Last Name
  • Lived In Location
  • Any Event Year
  • Any Event Location
  • Add Family Member: Spouse First & Middle Name and Last Name
  • Keyword* (Hint: Occupations of residents were frequently noted in city directories.)
  • Publication Title
  • Gender* (drop-down menu)
  • Residence Year

*All fields on this page, except Gender, will display Exact and Similar matching options after data has been entered into the field. Location matching options differ from the name matching.

Publication Search Tips

The Publications page allows you to browse or search all available titles in the collection. The A-Z list displays in the center of the page, while the Search Books box appears on the left.

To select a title from the A-Z list, simply scroll using your mouse. The page is on an infinite scroll, meaning that the list will expand as you scroll down. Hover the mouse over a title to see an information window appear. The window will contain: Title, Author, Location, Publication Year, and Subject details. Click the title you are interested in to be redirected to a search page specifically for that title. The most common fields found on a title search page are: First & Middle Name, Last Name, Any Event Year and Location, Keyword, and Page number.

To search the list of publications, use the Search Books box to the left, entering any combination of fields you feel necessary:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Publication Year range
  • Subject - what is the book about
  • Location - where was the title published or what location(s) are the primary focus of the title

The list in the center of the screen will refine to match your search query. Click the title link to be redirected to a search page specifically for that title.

NOTE: None of the search fields on the Publications page Search Books box will display Exact and Similar matching options after data has been entered into the field. The title specific search pages do offer these options.
