Library of Congress Classification System

Mitchell Community College Library utilizes the Library of Congress classification system in which books are organized by their subjects and denoted by a letter on the spine label. There are 21 main classes and within each are more specific sub-classifications.

Call Numbers

Unique call numbers identify and organize items near other materials on the same or similar subjects. When reading a call number, consider each section independently. Let's consider the call number for Roald Dahl's MatildaPZ 7 .D1515 Mat 1988.

  • PZ defines the class and subclass. Within Class P for Languages & Literature, PZ represents fiction and juvenile belles lettres.
  • 7 is the classification numbers, which further defines the subject matter.
  • D1515 is the cutter number and usually indicates the author, but can also identify further subject subdivision or geographic area.
  • Mat is the second cutter and usually indicates the title of the work.
  • 1988 is the year of publication.

Search the Library Catalog

 

To search the library catalog:

  1. Visit the Library's catalog by selecting Books from the Library Homepage.
  2. Enter your search terms and select your parameters, then click Search.

Placing a Hold

To place an item on hold:

  1. Follow the steps to search the catalog.
  2. To the right of the material you wish to request, click Place Hold.
  3. If prompted, log into your account by entering your library card number and password. (For Mitchell students, your student ID number is your library card number).
  4. Select your pickup location and notification preferences and complete any other pertinent details, then click Submit.

Once the item arrives at your designated pickup location, you will receive an automated notification, at which time you can visit the library's circulation desk to claim your item.

eBooks

An alternative to print books are electronic books, also known as eBooks, that are published in a form that can be read on a computer or handheld device. Mitchell Community College subscribes to an array of eBook providers. Students, faculty, and staff can gain free access to these resources by entering their Mitchell credentials when prompted.
